CHAPTER 5

"would you be willing to help me out?" Pattie asked

I nodded "What is it that you need?"

"A spy" I looked at her, confused...
"Yes, a spy. More like an agent. You see, I need someone to help we watch over my son. He feels like I follow him everywhere and don't give him enough independence or freedom... I'm a mother, can you blame me?" She smiled "So I made a deal with him. I promised him that for a whole month, I would 'lay off his back'. No matter where he travels, what he does or who he sees... I know I promised but I really shouldn't have. I trust my son, I really do but just like any other teenager, he can make mistakes sometimes. I just want what's best for him, because everything he does is reported and commented on by the press. This is a sensitive issue, I can't leave him. You have to understand... I need to make sure he'll be okay"

I really didn't know what to say... Finally, I broke the silence "Yes, I understand. You're just being a mom."

"So, would you be willing to help?"

"How exactly can I help?"

"I need you to follow him around, like a spy. Watch from afar. If you think he's doing something wrong, stop him. Follow him. Just make sure he doesn't get into any trouble"

"Uh... Can I do that?"

"Don't worry, I've told Scooter everything and he agrees with me. He'll help you out if you need anything. But he's the only one in on it. I couldn't tell Kenny because he's too close to Justin and might let it slip by accident. No one else knows"

I this was the first time she mentioned her son's name... Justin

"I just have two more questions, when do you want me to get started?"

"As soon as you can, that would be great. Here's a list of phone numbers you might need, including mine and Scooter's. And here are Justin's plans for the month" She said tenderly "I know it's a lot to ask from someone, since it means you'll have to give up a month of your life"

"I can do it, I have nothing else to do this summer. Besides, it can be an adventure" I smiled, and she smiled back. "Last question... why me?"

She giggled "Well... I know how talented your father is, so I just assumed good spy skills ran in the family. I couldn't get your father to do it. Just imagine what would happen if Justin spotted him! He would think he was being stalked by a grown man... he would tell Kenny and the whole thing would turn into a big mess. Also, you're the perfect age so you can easily pass for a random fan girl, so even if Justin sees you several times he won't doubt anything."

"I'm convinced. I'll do it. I just need one day"

"Really? Thank you so much! You don't know what this means to me! I really appreciate it thank you"

Five minutes later, I said goodbye and Pattie was on her way. I flopped into the chair. What a day!

It took me a while to ingest everything she had said. Why did I agree to it so fast? I mean I know I'm desperate, but do I really want to spend my summer following some famous kid around the country? I might grow to like him eventually, or I might not. We'll see how this all turns out. If I get bored, I think I can just stop... Besides, I've always loved playing spies and hiding in the bushes. For all I know, this could end up being fun!

A real adventure... I was ready. Bring it on Justin Bieber.

CHAPTER 6

If I wanted to be a good spy, I had to learn everything there is to know about the mission. Thankfully, I knew just the person. I invited Perla over, took out a notebook and pen.

“So Perla, I called you over because I needed you to tell me everything you know about Justin Bieber”

Her eyes opened in surprise. Usually, I would never want to hear about him but now I sort of regret not listening to what she said all those years.

“What makes you interested in him suddenly?” She asked, “Does this have anything to do with Pattie and her visit? Why did she visit you by the way? You never told me!”

I made a gesture that meant ‘my lips are sealed’. “Secret mission” I winked at her

She rolled her eyes “You? A mission?” I didn’t say anything. “Fine, but you’re gonna tell me eventually…” then, as if she had forgotten all about her curiosity, she asked “So do you really want to know everything??” sounding oddly enthusiastic. Jeez, it was just a boy.

“Everything.” I really didn’t want to know all the useless details but… I guess I had to.

“Where do I begin?” She smiled at me, then thought for a while. Finally, she spilled. Names, birthdays, events, girlfriends, concerts, tours… Everything I didn’t know from the movie. I carefully wrote all of it down, without memorizing a thing. I would go over it later.

She finally ended her monologue with recent events “Did you know he won against
Bruno Mars AND Eminem at the VMA awards?” It was this award, that award, Derek, his other weird names, Johnson, Pencils of Promise, Heart for Heart… Everything!
She talked endlessly, giving me too much information to grasp. My pen just kept scribbling words to catch up.

When she was done, she didn’t bother asking me why I was doing this. Knowing me,
she probably guessed I wouldn’t tell.

Later, I went over all my notes.

Before, I didn’t really have an opinion about Bieber. Like I said, he was a handsome boy but I had no idea about all his charity work, donations and projects to give back. He also visits hospitals just to cheer up the kids? You don’t get that from his movie. But maybe that’s because he doesn’t go around publicly announcing it…

I was genuinely shocked. I started to look at him in a different light; maybe he wasn’t so bad after all? I wouldn’t appreciate what he did if he was all “Look at me, look what I did” that’s conceited. But instead he was all “Help me out, let’s give back” and that surprised me. I honestly didn’t expect him to be so caring.

CHAPTER 7

I think I was ready to spy on this guy… I had enough background information. I followed him on twitter just to see what he tweets and if he was dumb enough to mention to the world what he was up to or where he went. I sure hope not, it would make my job much easier.

Even though all I did was get the ‘low-down’ on the Biebs, I still felt like today was very productive.

So what’s next? Tomorrow I start… but where?

Pattie had left me both her phone number and Scooter’s on the fridge. Under it was Justin’s FULL schedule.

Nothing until 2. Huh? What did that mean? Where would he be?

Fine, let’s skip that. What's next? I squinted at the small handwriting.

Lincoln Park, Chicago Illinois

And then nothing else for the rest of the day. How can this kid have so much free time? What's going on?

wait... Chicago?!?! That's an hour away! And I don't have a car! Why did this have to be so hard?… sigh.

Lincoln Park, that’s where I’ll start.

I walked over to the garage and saw a sticky note. It said: "Yes, you can borrow the car "
Thanks dad, I thought. Always a step ahead of me.

I had to be prepared in case I couldn't come back home, so I packed a whole suitcase full of clothes and snacks and threw it into the back of the car. I also packed a pillow and my diary.

On my way, I stopped by the 1$ store to pick up a couple of disguises. Just the basics: Sunglasses, two wigs (a black one and a red one), binoculars, a new notebook…Everything else I needed was in my purse.

When I got to the park, I thought it would be fun to dress-up for my first mission. I put on the white sunglasses and black wig with curly hair. I looked at my watch, it was 2:07 exactly. He should be here any minute.

I put my stuff down on the park bench, and waited. I looked around, it was beautiful and huge. So… I’m a spy huh? Pretty cool. I thought about my approach to the mission. I wasn’t worried if he spotted me because I was in a costume. But just in case, I decided I would pretend to be a fan. Safe way out. I would ask him for his autograph, then give it to Perla.

I noticed a crowd started gathering all the way across the park, very far from where I was. I went to see what was happening, and after what felt like an hour of walking, I noticed there was a lot of screaming teenage girls. Damn, no one would make this easy for me. They must have spotted him… *sigh* I wonder if he tweeted anything about where he was?

But I went to take a closer look, and climbed a tree. I saw Taylor Swift signing autographs! So it wasn’t Justin? By now I was confused.

I wanted to get an autograph myself, but there was just too much chaos. By the time I got to her thought all the shoving and screaming, she would have probably decided to stop. Besides, I couldn’t get distracted, I was on a mission.

I had to see if Justin tweeted anything. I just have to check my phone… which I left in my purse at the bench. I sighed and walked all the way back but – where was my purse? I set it right here on the bench! Looking around frantically, I saw a figure running away... He had my purse!

“HEY! COME BACK! THAT’S MY PURSE! I’M CALLING THE POLICE” I ran after him frantically
