CHAPTER 30
I was first greeted by a tall skinny man with sunglasses. He took away my phone, gave me a number to pick it up, and searched my pockets for a camera. Then he smiled and let me in.
It was a well lit, medium sized room with a bar and booths. It felt very empty, with only about three other people there, occupying the bar. There was a small stage with a microphone and a karaoke machine. A small sign that said: Karaoke Night, Thursdays @ 8. Happy hour Fridays from 11 to 12 Beer is Your Friend
I sat at a booth. Justin wasn’t here yet, so I waited. I looked around, contemplated the paintings.
Soon after, the door opened and in walked an incredibly tired looking Justin. He dragged his feet behind him and slowly made his way up to the booth. When he sat down I could see he was looking kind of pale.
His beautiful brown eyes were filled with sadness and depression.
“Justin, what’s wrong?” I ask calmly
“Hey Eva…” He looked down solemnly.
Something is bothering him and this needs to stop. I couldn’t bear seeing him like this… he…
“Justin… I… Are you ok?”
“I’ll be fine, just need a drink” He made an effort to smile weakly.
“But I thought you never drank before?”
“I didn’t. There’s gotta be a first time right?” He laughed softly
“Justin I really don’t think this is a good idea. There are other ways to get your mind off things.”
“Believe me… I’ve tried. I’ll only have one drink.”
I nodded but I couldn’t help but feel anxious.
“Please tell me what’s bothering you. Sometimes talking about it helps”
He sighed deeply and slowly… He was breaking my heart.
“I can’t….”
“Justin…”
“I…”
He looks up into my eyes
“I trust you Eva. Promise you won’t tell anyone.”
My heart warmed up at those three words… ‘I trust you’.
I felt so… special. I just know that I would never let him down. I couldn’t. He means too much to me.
“I promise Justin, I won’t tell anyone, ever.”
“I’m…” He took a deep breath “I’m not who you think I am. Eva, I’m a bad person. I lied. I have so many problems going on in my life right now, I just don’t know how to handle it anymore” he let out in a painfully depressed voice
“What problems?”
“Well like… I…” he hesitated “I was a real jerk to my friends. My real friends. My best friends... Being with you made me realize how much I miss them. How much I miss talking and hanging out, just like we do. I needed you. I need true friends. You reminded me how great and important they are. And now I see… I ruined everything. I lost them… how could I lose them?” His voice cracked.
“What about Ryan, Chaz, Christian… and”
“It’s an act, it’s all an act! They can’t stand me anymore. But Scooter pays them. I found out… today…”
He gulped down his vodka.
“It’s been a year... I can’t anymore.” He looked down. I could feel from his voice how lonely he was… who could ever live without friends?
“Justin, it’s never too late to get your friends back. They can forgive you… You just have to do the right thing and apologize.”
“I have… countless times…”
We were both quiet for a moment. I was still in shock. I didn’t know what else to say, what more advice to give.
“You know… If…” I felt completely helpless. “I’m here for you, Justin. I’m your friend. And I’m going to help you through this”
He reached out and held my hand. My heart fluttered.
“I’m sorry Eva, but… I don’t feel like talking about it anymore... Could we change the subject?” he asked sadly then took two more sips
“Okay”
