Payton tapped the beat of the music from the radio on the steering wheel as the summer air blew her long, beachy hair back. Her long-time best friend, Justin, had just called her saying he was back in Atlanta after his summer tour. She had already been on the road from Charleston for four hours so she would be arriving soon. Payton’s mother and Justin’s mother had grown up together and before Justin made it big, she and Justin had been best friends back in Canada. After his move to Atlanta, they texted each other every day, and tried to as much as possible in order to remain close. Each felt incredibly comfortable the other person and told each other everything about their lives. Payton always went to Justin when she needed something, and vice versa; especially when advice on relationships was in need. He just seemed to get it. When Payton discovered that her boyfriend had cheated on her, Justin was the first person she called. He knew exactly what to say to make her feel tons better. Payton and her family moved to Charleston about two years ago, and ever since then, they tried to visit each other every month. When Justin went on tour, they didn’t see each other in person the entire time and this would be their first time since then. Payton and Justin had always had chemistry, but neither of the pair wanted to say anything, or do anything because they both thought the other person felt nothing, and they didn’t want to ruin their strong bond.
Payton was beyond excited to see him and felt her heart rate begin to speed up as her car raced down the road. She smiled when she saw the Atlanta skyline in the horizon and knew that the long awaited moment would be there shortly. She couldn’t wait to talk to Justin about his tour and the happenings of the first summer they spent apart.
Payton pulled up the familiar house and nearly jumped out of the car. I’m here, you tard! Where’s my over-the-top greeting?! she texted him. Next thing she knew, Justin was running out the front door full speed with his arms opened.
“Pay! Oh my gosh, I missed you!” he said at full volume. The two collided and Payton felt something on her lips. Was Justin really kissing her her? She was too caught up in the moment to fully realize what was going on, and before she knew it, she buried her head on his chest like the whole thing didn’t even happen.
“Aw, I missed you too! Let’s not let this happen again, okay, popstar?” Payton responded pulling slightly away in order to look into his warm eyes, trying to ignore the kiss.
Justin laughed and threw his head back. “I couldn’t agree more.” He smiled, wrapped his arm around her waist, and led her into the open-plan house. Everyone inside greeted her with open arms and smiles. They all asked how her parents are doing, and how her summer was, just small talk.
“Alright, alright guys, Payton had a long drive here; she doesn’t want to be bombarded with all these questions,” Justin interjected throwing his hands up in her defense.
“Oh my lanta, Justin, calm down, they haven’t seen just as long as you haven’t!” Payton smiled, giving him a hard time. Justin laughed and grabbed her hand and led her to the basement/family room. “Well I guess we’re leaving, bye guys! It was nice seeing y’all!” Payton barely got out before the basement door closed behind her.
They plopped down on the oversized, plush bean bag chairs in front of the entertainment center. Payton kicked her shoes off and exhaled deeply, laying her head back and closing her eyes. “You alright?” Justin asked, giving her a genuinely concerned look.
“Yeah! I couldn’t be better!” she laughed. “It just feels so good to see you and everyone. This summer was amazing, but it was different not seeing you everyday. It just kinda felt like there was this void in me. Cheesy, Cheesy, I know, but we’re best friends,” Payton said rolling her eyes and laughing at herself.
“Well, it really is pretty cheesy, not gonna lie, but I felt the same way. I missed having someone the same age around me at all time. Don’t get me wrong, I love the adults and all but it definitely wasn’t the same,” Justing agreed. “Anyways, on a less serious note, how was your summer? What did you do without the greatest person in the wold?” Justin joked, making a superman pose, acting smug.
Payton giggled, “It was still fun, don’t worry. I was really busy with swim team and coaching and cross country on top of that, but Lexi and I spent a lot of time together going to the beach and stuff. Ya know, gettin’ our tannnnnnnnn on!” Payton added with throwing her arms up in the air and her head back, being adorably over-dramatic.
“You’re just as pale as I am!” Justin retorted, looking her up and down then comparing his arms to hers.` “I know, I know, but I can try, can’t I?” Payton shot right back. Justin laughed putting his hands up in an act of surrender. “Oh, and I’m really really sorry for not coming to any of your shows, none of the dates worked out. I feel really really bad, because I really wanted to come watch you beast up the stage in front of adoring fangirls!”
“Haha, very funny, but don’t worry about it! Really, it’s alright, okay? I didn’t come to any of your swim meets, so let’s just call it even,” Justin responded genuinely placing his hand on her knee. Sparks flew up Payton’s body but she tried to ignore them in order to keep the awkwardness at the minimum. The two just stared into each other’s eyes for what seemed like the longest time before Justin broke the silence. He took a deep breath, “So, umm, Payton, can you help me with something?”
“Uhhh, yeah. I guess,” she said with a confused look on her face.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing too difficult. Even you can do it!” Justin said teasing his best friend.
“Ha. Ha. Ha. Very funny, Justin Drew,” she said pushing his shoulder.
“Why thank you, Payton Laine,” He replied instantly.
“Touché.” Justin led her over to the piano in the other room and sat down. He patted the bench on his left side, motioning her to sit next to him. “Umm, Justin, what are we doing?”
“I said I want you to help me with something,” Justin replied jokingly.
“Well, shut the front door! I had no idea! But what do you want help with?” Payton shot back with a grin on her face.
“Okay, can you play something for me?” Justin asked, looking over at her.
“Well, I guess, I haven’t played the piano in years so I don’t really remem-”
“No,” Justin interjected, “I’m going to teach you something real quick. It’s easy, and you’ll be able to pick it up.” He smiled at her and played a series of base chords. “Think you can do that?”
“Of course,” Payton answered playing back the base chords with ease, just as Justin said she would.
“Alright keep playing them, ‘kay?”
“Mmmmhmmm,” Payton said looking down at the keys as she moved her finger swiftly over them, focusing on the pattern.
Justin began to play melody that meshed with the chords Payton continued to play. He opened his mouth and began to sing with is famous voice. Payton took a deep breath as soon as the first words came out of his mouth.

So prettier than all the rest
The star of my show
So many times I wished
You’d be the one for me
But never knew it’d get like this

(He played the whole thing, but my post was too long for it, (: )
“Payton, I like you. I really really really like you. I’ve liked you for so long, but I didn’t want to say anything. When I wrote this song, you were the girl in my mind. You’re everything I want in a girl and after spending so much time away from you I knew I couldn’t spend another day without saying something about it to you,” he said, all in rush.
Payton leaned in and kissed him in response to his confession. She smiled into the kiss and said, “I really really really like you too.” Payton bit her lip as the two rested their foreheads against the others and just soaked in the moment. “Justin, that was the nicest, sweetest, most wonderful thing that anyone has ever done for me. Thank you.”
“Thiss why I kissed you earlier. If you didn’t freak out, then I would have known that this was the right time. If you did freak out, I wasn’t going to say anything and risk the friendship that means so much the both of us,” Just said.
“Awww, Justin, again, that is so... thoughtful. You are... just... I don’t even know! You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.” He pulled her into a hug, and knew from that moment, that this was real. He had the girl of his dreams.
